After fourteen years, nonstop flights between Bangladesh and Pakistan have resumed. A new chapter in bilateral relations began when a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Dhaka touched down at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan.

According to news agency PTI, the aircraft arrived at the airport on Thursday and was met with a high-profile reception that included a traditional jal salute.

Strong ties exist between Bangladesh and Pakistan. The restoration of air connections coincides with improving ties between the two nations. “A new chapter in Pakistan-Bangladesh friendship — restoration of air connectivity after 14 years” is how PAA characterized the occasion.

Following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s removal from office on August 5, 2024, due to widespread student-led protests in Bangladesh, the two nations have been increasingly engaging diplomatically.

Flight schedules and operations: Under a temporary license that will last until March 30, Biman Bangladesh Airlines will begin operating twice-weekly flights between Dhaka and Karachi. Whether or not a long-term permit can be issued will be decided during this trial period.

The airlines say that on Thursday and Saturday, the flights will depart Dhaka at 8 p.m. local time and reach Karachi at 11 p.m. At midnight, the return flight will depart Karachi and arrive in Dhaka at 4:20 am.

Since last year, there has been discussion about resuming direct flights in an effort to improve bilateral relations and increase trade. After Bangladesh broke away from Pakistan in 1971, relations have occasionally been strained for many years.

The plan to restart the flight was first announced in August 2025 during the visit of Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar to Dhaka. The visit marked the first high-level interaction between the two nations in over ten years.

According to officials, Biman Bangladesh Airlines has received official approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of Pakistan to operate routes and utilize specific air corridors within Pakistani airspace.
