Mark Zuckerberg wore a $2 million Rolex that tracks the moon while talking about the AI lab trying to turn the clock on the disease
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently detailed his plans to use artificial intelligence (AI) to permanently accelerate medical research while wearing a vintage $2 million Rolex watch designed to track the moon’s mechanical cycles. The tech billionaire was seen with the rare watch on his wrist during a video interview on the “No Priors” podcast with his wife, Priscilla Chan. The couple used the platform to discuss the goals of their medical research facility, the Biohub, an initiative funded by the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative that aims to deploy cutting-edge computer models to identify, treat and eliminate human diseases. The conversation focused on the future of digital science, but watch experts were immediately drawn to the historical masterpiece on Zuckerberg’s left wrist.
Identified as a vintage Rolex reference 6062 “Stelline,” the watch is an incredibly rare mid-century piece and one of the most valuable and sought-after pieces in the world. Depending on the specific metal of the case and overall state of preservation, Stelline examples routinely exceed the seven-figure threshold at international auction houses, with top-tier variations worth up to $2 million.
Zuckerberg is a CEO with an estimated fortune of $200 billion, who spent the beginning of his career pioneering the digital world. However, he chose a fully mechanical analogue instrument from the 1950s to accompany a discussion on solving complex biological problems using modern artificial intelligence algorithms.
A masterpiece from the golden age of horology
The reference 6062 holds a special place in Rolex history. It was introduced around 1950, before the Swiss watchmaker became famous for rugged tool watches like the Submariner, Explorer, and GMT-Master.
The Reference 6062 was only produced for a few years, and was one of only two Rolex models to be equipped with an automatic triple calendar and integrated moon phase complication. The other is the reference 8171.What made the reference 6062 special was its ability to combine advanced watchmaking with reliable Rolex design. It used a 9¾-caliber automatic movement housed in the brand’s signature 36mm Oyster case with a screw-down caseback, which helped it retain the water-resistant properties for which Rolex was known.
The dial displays the day and month through two small windows below 12 o’clock. The central indicator hand shows the date by moving around the outer edge of the dial, while the moon phase display is housed within the small seconds dial at six o’clock. The “Stelline” moniker, which means “little stars” in Italian, comes from the rare version of the watch that replaces the standard hour markers with eight gold star-shaped markers. The reference 6062 also has a special place in Rolex history. Company records show that Rolex used the name “Cosmograph” in advertisements for the reference 6062 many years before it was closely associated with the Daytona chronograph. This association has made the watch one of the most sought-after vintage Rolex models.Collectors have shown how important the reference 6062 is. In 2023, a well-preserved rose gold stele was sold at a Christie’s auction for 2.2 million Swiss francs, or about $2.7 million.
An even rarer version with a black dial and diamond hour markers sold at auction last year for $6.2 million, making it one of the most expensive Rolex watches ever sold publicly.
Evolution of the billionaire’s wrist
Zuckerberg, who wears multi-million dollar vintage Rolex watches, gives a glimpse into his personal style. For years, he was known for wearing simple gray T-shirts and jackets, like regular Joe.Since then, the Meta president has built an impressive collection of luxury watches.
In September 2024, Zuckerberg shared a photo on Instagram wearing a Patek Philippe Reference 5236P, a platinum Grand Complications In-Line Perpetual Calendar with an alligator strap. The watch originally sold for $148,331 before being discontinued and displays the day, date and month in a single horizontal line.A few days later, during an appearance at an Acquired podcast event, Zuckerberg was seen wearing a rose gold De Bethune DB25 Starry Varius.
The value of this rare Swiss watch is more than 80 thousand dollars, and only 20 pieces of it are manufactured every year. Some versions of the Starry Varius, which contain discs made from real meteorites, can sell for up to $260,000.
Does Meta CEO always wear luxury watches?
Zuckerberg’s watch collection includes some of the world’s most respected independent watchmakers. At the 2024 Meta Connect conference, he wore an all-aluminum watch from FP Journe’s LineSport Souveraine collection.
This model was produced between 2011 and 2014, and can sell for up to $299,000 on the resale market. In January 2025, during a video about Meta’s US operations, he was seen wearing a Greubel Forsey watch worth more than $900,000.
The watch consists of 281 parts assembled by hand.
Greubel Forsey CEO Michel Nediger later told Bloomberg that Zuckerberg had shown “a real appreciation for the more traditional approach to luxury watchmaking.”His collection also includes a yellow gold Rolex Daytona “Le Mans” worth approximately $300,000, a rare FP Journe Chronomètre Bleu Byblos watch that sold for $254,000 at a Sotheby’s auction, and a George Daniels Annual worth between $400,000 and $800,000. His most valuable modern watch is the FP Journe Tourbillon Souverain Cœur de Rubis, which features a solid sapphire dial and matching yellow gold bracelet. It is limited to only 20 pieces produced worldwide, and is valued at approximately $2 million.Despite owning many rare luxury watches, Zuckerberg has also been seen wearing much simpler watches. In April 2025, he appeared on The Colin and Samir Show wearing a white Casio G-Shock GA2100WS-7A with a bright blue dial. A Japanese quartz watch costs around $120, making it the least expensive watch to wear in public.
