Mar-a-Lago flips red to blue? Emily Gregory defeats Republican in Florida district that houses Trump estate

Democrat Emily Gregory won a special election in Florida that President Donald Trump also voted for.

Democratic Representative from Florida, Emily Gregory, defeated Republican John Maples, who was supported by US President Donald Trump, in a special election that took place in the 87th House District of Florida.

Gregory, a public health expert and small business owner, is a first-time candidate and was not surprised by the win. “When I started this nine months ago, I obviously thought it was possible,” Gregory told MSNBC on Tuesday night. She later added: “I may have done some crazy calculations to decide that this was a good opportunity, but it was.” “So we did. And so my calculations worked out.”Gregory received 51% of the vote to Maples’ 49% with all precincts reporting.

President Trump voted in the race via mail-in ballot even though he is not a fan of the key vote. “Mar-a-Lago just went from red to blue, which should have made Republicans sweat in the midterms,” Heather Williams, chair of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, said on social media. “Trump’s +11 district in his backyard shouldn’t favor Democrats, but tonight proves Republicans are vulnerable everywhere.”

Williams said Democrats in the state have flipped 29 districts since Trump’s election.Ken Martin, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, celebrated X’s win, saying voters “sent a message.”“If Democrats can win in Trump’s backyard, we’re sure they can win anywhere across the country. On to November!” Martin wrote.“This victory replicates an undeniable trend in Florida: With year-round organizing and investment in infrastructure, Democrats can run and win anywhere — including Donald Trump’s backyard,” said Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried. “Floridians are tired of chaos, corruption and high prices on everything from groceries to gas and health care. They are voting for trusted leaders like Emily to steady the ship and bring common sense and people-centered solutions back to our communities.”
