British King Charles’ office confirmed that the British monarch will attend a wreath-laying ceremony at the September 11 Memorial in New York City next week, as part of his official visit to the United States. The event will honor the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks, which killed more than 2,600 people, including 67 Britons.New York Mayor Zahran Mamdani is also expected to participate in the ceremony alongside other officials, although there will not be a private meeting between the two, Reuters reported, citing the mayor’s press secretary, Joe Calvillo.
A private meeting between the King and the Mayor of New York City was not planned
While both leaders are expected to appear at the same public event to mark the anniversary, Mamdani’s office clarified that there is no private meeting scheduled with the king. The participation is part of a broader official program that includes prominent figures from the United States and the United Kingdom.
Visiting a country full of diplomatic engagements
King Charles is scheduled to travel through Washington, D.C., New York and Virginia during his state visit from April 27 to 30. He will also address the US Congress, becoming the first British monarch to do so since Queen Elizabeth II in 1991.US President Donald Trump is scheduled to host a private meeting and official banquet for King and Queen Camilla during the visit.
US-British relations are under the spotlight
The visit comes at a time when relations between Washington and London are tense.
Trump has publicly suggested that King Charles could help improve diplomatic relations, while also criticizing aspects of UK policy in his recent comments.Despite political differences, the royal visit is seen as a symbolic effort to strengthen long-term security and diplomatic cooperation between the two countries, with the 9/11 memorial event seen as a key moment of shared remembrance.
