Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations has accused the United States of using the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference to misrepresent Tehran’s nuclear program and divert attention from Washington’s violations, as tensions between the two countries escalate at the United Nations. In a statement published on its official accountThe statement also criticized international bodies, saying that the UN Security Council, the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Board of Governors “not only failed to condemn these unlawful attacks, but, very regrettably, took actions that upended the roles of victim and aggressor.”Iran said the United States portrays its nuclear activities as a threat while using the NPT forum to push what it called a politicized narrative, ignoring broader disarmament commitments. At the United Nations in New York, Iranian envoy Amir Saeed Irani warned that lasting stability in the Gulf region would require an end to what he described as the ongoing aggression against Iran, along with guarantees that such actions would not be repeated and respect for Iran’s sovereignty.
Speaking at the conference, he said Iran supports freedom of navigation in key waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman, but warned that continued military escalation could undermine regional and global security. He urged the UN Security Council to address the situation.Irvani claimed that since February 28, the United States and Israel have engaged in a “large-scale and unprovoked war of aggression” against Iran in violation of international law and the UN Charter, especially Article 2(4), adding that these actions have disrupted maritime security. These developments come amid a sharp dispute between Washington and Tehran at the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty review conference in New York, where Iran was chosen as one of the vice-chairs for the month-long meeting.US official Christopher Yu criticized Iran’s choice, describing it as an “insult” to the treaty. He said that “it is indisputable that Iran has long demonstrated its disdain for non-proliferation obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty,” and described the move as “beyond shame and embarrassment to the credibility of this conference.”The Iranian ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Reza Najafi, rejected these statements, describing them as “unfounded and politically motivated.”He added: “It is indefensible that the United States, as the only country to have ever used nuclear weapons, and a country that continues to expand and modernize its nuclear arsenal… seeks to position itself as an arbiter of compliance.”The dispute comes at a time when the nuclear issue remains central to the ongoing conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that Iran cannot be allowed to possess nuclear weapons, while Tehran asserts that its program is intended for peaceful purposes.
