Texas-born Indian teenager Ryan Mistry takes his grandmothers to prom.
Two grandmothers attended their first-ever prom at a small private school in Addison, Texas, where high school senior Ryan Mistry didn’t have to think twice about who he would ask to be his prom date.
It was Pa and Ma, his grandmothers from Africa and India. Dressed in Indian sarees, the two women posed for photos with Mistry as the school celebrated its decision to break away from the tradition, WFAA reported. This year Westwood had just 17 students in its graduating class — 12 girls and five boys. Ryan said his decision was simple but emotional because he wanted to take in his two grandmothers who shaped his life.
But Mistry’s mother remembered the childhood promise she had already made to Rayyan. When he was a child, Ryan would tell his grandmothers that he would take them to prom, said Ryan’s mother, Trisha Mistry.“They had their hair, makeup and nails done. I felt like I had two daughters,” Trisha told WFAA of the grandmothers’ preparations for the big day in Ryan’s life.“Not only did I raise him, she raised him in a village. The days I couldn’t watch, [his grandmas] “He was there,” Trisha said.
“I have fun with my grandmother,” Rayyan said. “This is my way of expressing my gratitude for everything my grandmother did for me.”Principal Heather Lorsey appreciated Ryan’s way of thinking and said, “We definitely could use more Ryan.”Ryan’s parents, Jignesh “Jay” Mistry and Trisha Mistry, also attended their son’s bash.
