'How's this comedy?': SNL UK faces backlash over crude joke referencing Mark Zuckerberg and Adolf Hitler

A segment on Saturday Night Live UK has sparked backlash after a controversial joke about Mark Zuckerberg and his California hideout sparked a shocked reaction from fans and viewers. The statement aired during the “Weekend Update” segment of the show, where co-host Anya Magliano referred to reports that Zuckerberg is building a bunker under his compound in California.

“It has been revealed that billionaire Mark Zuckerberg is building a bunker under his compound in California,” she said. Then she added: “And I hope that this bunker will be used in the same way that Hitler used it.”The comment elicited audible gasps from the live studio audience. The reference was to Adolf Hitler, who died by suicide in his bunker in 1945 at the end of World War II.Clips of the clip quickly spread online, with viewers reacting strongly.

Some criticized the joke as over-the-top, questioning whether such references should be used in comedy. One viewer wrote on social media: “How is this comedy?” While another said: “That line about the hideout… disgusting.”Others defended the clip, saying the sarcasm often crosses the line. Some viewers said the show was “one of the funniest things”, showing a split in audience reaction. The graphic was part of a broader segment that also targeted several public figures, including US President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and golfer Tiger Woods.

The show itself is a UK adaptation of the long-running US format and is still in its infancy. The first episode attracted around 226,000 viewers, while the second episode saw a slight decline in audience numbers.Zuckerberg, Meta’s president, has not publicly responded to the joke yet. Reports about his real estate projects, including a large complex in California, have spread in recent months, although details remain limited.
