A fast-moving forest fire that killed at least 12 people broke out in areas of southern Spain on Friday after people were trapped in burning cars as they tried to escape on foot.
The death toll from the wildfires, already one of the highest in Spain’s modern history, could rise, as authorities said 23 people were still missing. They added that many of the victims were believed to be foreigners. The fire, which began on Thursday in an area of steep valleys, destroyed forests and tracts of land in the Los Gallardos region of Andalusia. An unidentified man who was evacuated said he saw “gas cylinders exploding, houses on fire, and windows shattering.”
