A 2,000-year-old circular temple discovered at Pelusium reveals how ancient Egyptians worshiped the waters of the Nile

Excavations at the Tell el-Farama site in North Sinai, carried out by an Egyptian archaeological team, have ended and resulted in the discovery of a rarely seen circular temple within the ruins of the ancient city of Pelusium, which also has a new identity than previously thought.

According to the Society for Biblical Archaeology, although this temple was thought to have been identified as a city hall when it was discovered in 2019, it has now been determined that it had a different purpose after archaeologists found evidence of hydraulic technology associated with the temple’s use.The circular temple was built in the second century AD and remained in use until the sixth century AD. Its main feature was a circular basin about sixty-five feet in diameter, in which water from the Nile River was stored for use as a water source for irrigating the land near the temple.

As a result of research conducted on this temple and its features, experts now believe that the temple was dedicated to the worship of the local god Pelusius, and there is an unusual mix of ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman architectural styles in the construction of the temple and its adjacent structures.

Discovery of a rare circular temple built to worship water at Pelusium

As stated in the government media service, the structure is 35 meters in diameter and has a square base that served as the foundation for what was most likely a large statue of the deity it represented.

Burnt red brick, which was mainly used for Roman hydraulic works, has allowed this site to remain an effective water complex for thousands of years. The builders used the Pelusian branch of the Nile to supply the basin with living water, which played a major role in ancient Egyptian purification rituals and was a symbol of fertility and cosmic balance.

Why wasn’t this an office building?

In 2019, archaeologists discovered the circular walls of the site, which were previously thought to have a political function, but the interpretation of the site changed radically as more excavations were carried out.

The complex drainage systems, cisterns and multiple entrances indicate that this was a specialized religious site, rather than a political administrative building as originally thought. The association between the god Pelusium and the Greek term meaning “silt” or “mud” suggests that the site was closely associated with the fertile silt of the Nile River and the life-giving forces of nature.

The historical importance of the Pelusium site

Pelusium has been a culturally rich site and safety point for travelers for over a millennium. As a result, it has played an important role in the collective history of humanity.

For those traveling through the Sinai Desert region, the port city marked the beginning of their journey to Egypt and provided them with access to goods to be sold in Egypt. Furthermore, the unique and beautiful buildings of Pelusium Temple are a “remarkable reflection of human interaction” by blending indigenous Egyptian traditions with architectural designs brought to Egypt in the time of the Hellenistic and later Romans. In addition, this ancient tradition demonstrates how the waters of the Nile continued to be a source of spiritual and cultural sustenance throughout the eastern Mediterranean region long after its creation.
