Eight people, including the suspect, have died in a shooting at a school in British Columbia, with two more dead at a home believed to be connected to the incident, Canadian authorities said on Tuesday (Feb. 10, 2026).

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said more than 25 people were injured, including two with life-threatening injuries, after a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.

School shootings are rare in Canada.

The town of Tumbler Ridge, with a population of about 2,400, is more than 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) north of Vancouver, near the Alberta border. The provincial government website lists Tumbler Ridge Secondary School as having 175 students in grades 7 to 12.

RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd told reporters that investigators have identified the shooter but are not releasing the name, but the suspect’s motive remains unclear.

“We’re not in a place to understand why or what prompted this tragedy,” Floyd said.

Police are still investigating how the victims were connected to the shooter, he said.

“As part of the initial response to an active shooter, police entered the school to locate the threat. During the search, officers located multiple victims. A man believed to be the shooter was found deceased from a self-inflicted wound,” the RCMP said in a statement.

“Six additional people, including the suspect, died inside the school. Two victims were hospitalized with serious or life-threatening injuries. A third victim died en route to the hospital.” The Peace River South School District said earlier Tuesday that both the middle school and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School were on “lockdown and secure and hold.”

Larry Neufeld, a member of the Legislature South of Peace River, told reporters at the Legislature that “extra” resources have been sent to the community, including RCMP and ambulance support.

He said he did not want to release more information out of concern that the safety of the ongoing operation could be compromised.
