An Indian-origin biotech engineer admits to exposing himself on an Emirates flight to the UK

An Indian-origin biotechnology engineer has admitted to committing an indecency act after exposing himself during an Emirates flight from Dubai to the UK, according to the Daily Mail.Brito Lawrence, 27, appeared before Newcastle District Court over the incident, which occurred on a long-haul flight from Dubai to Newcastle in June last year.According to prosecutors, Lawrence was sitting next to a woman and her young son when the accident occurred shortly after takeoff.Prosecutor Brian Payne told the court the woman initially became concerned after she noticed movement under a pillow placed on Lawrence’s lap and feared he might be concealing a weapon. The court heard she later realized Lawrence was exposing himself and informed cabin crew, who arrested him during the flight. In a victim impact statement read to the court, the woman described herself as “deeply disturbed” by the incident.“I tried to collect my emotions to prevent myself from causing more anxiety for my son,” she said. The woman, from Australia, was initially expected to give evidence via video link before Lawrence confessed to the crime.

Payne told the court that Lawrence denied intentionally exposing himself during his police interview, but later admitted he had been masturbating.Defense barrister Andy O’Hanlon said Lawrence was asleep during the flight and woke up feeling uncomfortable before moving his genitals out of his underwear.Lawrence, originally from Kerala, later moved to the UK to pursue a Masters in Biotechnology and Food Science. He previously worked as a development expert at Zaara Biotech LLC, court documents said.District Judge Kate Meek adjourned the case for sentencing until June 2, and said all sentencing options remained open, including an immediate prison sentence or referral to the Crown Court.
