Home prices in Texas are falling, coinciding with the exodus of Indian-origin residents.
Republican Brandon Gill, who rarely hides his hatred for immigrants, including Indians, despite his marriage to Indian-origin Danielle D’Souza, reacted to a report of a decline in the Texas housing market due to President Donald Trump’s crackdown on H-1B visa abuse. Bloomberg recently reported on this housing crisis, where Indian Americans who charged the market during the pandemic and decided to settle in the US are now considering leaving America. The New York Post reported that CBRE Group, a real estate firm, confirmed that H-1B workers drove the housing wave in the United States between 2018 and today, more than any other worker. But now, with Indian buyers backing out of the market, prices have started to fall. In Collin County, home prices were down nearly 9% year over year as of February, more than double the 4% decline recorded across the broader Dallas-Fort Worth metro, according to Redfin data.In response to the New York Post report, Brandon Gill said: “It is time to end H1B visas entirely.”
Home builders have designed houses for Indians with pooja room and spice kitchen
Here are some startling numbers about Indian Americans in the United States
- Collin and Denton counties have become the fastest-growing counties in the nation among those with populations of at least 1 million, census data showed.
- Collin County’s Indian-born population averaged more than 116,000 residents annually in the five years through 2024, a sharp rise from 70,000 in the previous five-year period.
- In Frisco alone, a city of 235,000, the share of the Indian population rose from about 6% in early 2010 to nearly 20% by mid-2020, census figures show.
Such was the demand for homes from American Indians, that prompting builders to design homes to suit these customers. One North Texas builder, Zack Schneider of Tradition Homes, has designed model homes with north-facing “puja” rooms for Hindu prayer and optional “spice kitchens” for buyers from India.
