A 23-year-old US Air Force pilot was killed after the heavy equipment he was operating fell on a bridge at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, the New York Post reported, citing officials.Pilot First Class Cedric Inilona was pronounced dead at the scene following the accident that occurred on Thursday. The Santa Barbara County Coroner’s Office confirmed his death, while officials said no one else was injured.The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, and the authorities have not revealed the type of equipment used.A security investigation committee was formed to determine the circumstances of the accident.
Military leaders pay tribute
In honoring the young pilot, US Space Force Col. James T. Horn III, commander of Space Launch Delta 30 and Space Force Base Vandenberg, said the entire base community was mourning the loss.“The Vandenberg family is grieving along with Cedric’s loved ones and teammates,” Horn was quoted as saying by the New York Times. “He left a lasting impression on his teammates with his character, dedication and genuine care for others.”
Lt. Col. Seth Paulsen, 30th Civil Engineer Squadron commander, also remembered Enilona for his positive attitude and commitment to those around him, saying he “brought out the best in everyone.”
His first mission after joining the army
Originally from the Philippines, Enilona later moved to St. Louis, Missouri. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 5, 2024, and his first duty station was Vandenberg.He served with the 30th Civil Engineer Pier and Aviation Equipment Squadron, a unit informally known as the “Dirt Boyz.”
The team is responsible for maintaining roads, airfields and other critical infrastructure that supports launch, test and range operations.According to Al Qaeda, Enilona earned the respect of his colleagues through his professionalism, humility and willingness to help others. His colleagues described him as someone who welcomed challenges, worked tirelessly, and made those around him feel included.
The strategic base plays a key role in space and missile missions
Located near Lompoc on California’s central coast, Vandenberg Space Force Base is one of the major military spaceports in the United States.The installation supports launching satellites into Earth orbit and conducting tests of unarmed intercontinental ballistic missiles, concluding missions at the Ronald Reagan Missile Defense Test Site in the Marshall Islands.Details of the memorial service have not yet been announced, officials said. The investigation into the fatal accident is still ongoing.
