The writing team behind the recent cancellation The Late Show with Stephen Colbert They decided to get creative and launch their own For Your Concern Emmy ad.
The group posted on social media a homemade video of FYC (watch it below). “CBS does not campaign for the Emmys for us, so, for purely financial reasons, the @colbertlateshow writers created a video for us for your consideration,” he wrote. Late show Writer Felipe Torres Medina (as first reported by LateNighter).
The reality is a bit more complicated. CBS aired FYC ads in New York and Los Angeles in support of the show generally (if not specifically for the outstanding writing for the variety series category). Additionally, CBS ran a FYC ad for Late Show on Hollywood ReporterWebsite, with a link to a page that lists all writers. Sources say CBS has historically bought Emmy campaigns for the show, but not specifically for the writing team.
Colbert’s team has been nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series almost every year of his career, but has not won. Late Show She enjoyed her first brilliant talk series win last year in the wake of CBS’ announcement that the show would be ending for 10 years.
As for FYC’s impromptu announcement, the video reads: “From the writers who brought you The Late Show with Stephen Colbert “Coming this summer… ‘We’d Love Amy.'” The video is modeled after the opening credits of an ’80s sitcom and introduces each (multiple) writer on the show one by one. The video concludes with an image of a young Colbert and the words, “Introducing Stephen T. Colbert as ‘Da Boss.'”
The aforementioned “purely financial reasons” statement is a jab at CBS’s statement last year when the company explained it had canceled the show “for purely financial reasons.” At the time, the line was considered a somewhat dubious claim given Colbert’s penchant for criticizing the Trump administration and CBS parent Paramount Global seeking regulatory approval for its merger with SkyDance.
The Television Academy will announce nominees for the 78th Emmy Awards on July 8.
