A major row erupted after the Feds contradicted claims by Sunny Naqvi’s family members that she was detained for nearly 43 hours after arriving at the Chicago airport, even though Naqvi is an American citizen.
The Department of Homeland Security said these allegations are blatantly false. Naqvi was referred for a secondary examination, which led to a 90-minute delay. She was not detained or transferred to ICE for detention. After the DHS allegation, many social media users found out about the previous cases filed by Sunny Naqvi and called her a lying fraudster.
Previous accusation of sexual harassment, attacking her ex-boyfriend
Citing old reports, they claimed that Naqvi is the same woman who was accused in 2019 of intimidation and illegal restraint.
Her ex-boyfriend at the time complained that Naqvi had contacted him after they broke up about deleting a social media post on Reddit in which the ex-boyfriend had posted something about a sexual harassment investigation involving Naqvi and a university professor. Naqvi showed up for his interview with another person and had the post deleted from his computer, brandishing a knife.
Naqvi was later acquitted of the intimidation charge, as the court found many inconsistencies in what Naqvi had previously said.
This leads to another case involving Naqvi who has accused former University of Illinois professor Joseph Petrie of sexual harassment. Petrie claimed that he was blackmailed by the accused and resigned.
Whether or not he was detained by ICE
Naqvi’s sister claimed that she was detained at O’Hare International Airport while returning from a flight with five other people who were with her. She was then transferred to an immigration facility in Broadview, Illinois and then to the Dodge County Jail in Wisconsin.
This all happened between Thursday and Saturday, and on Saturday morning, she was released from the Dodge County Jail, the family claimed. They said her phone location was visible at the ICE facility, even though the feds told family members she was not in custody.
Cook County Commissioner Kevin Morrison defended the family’s side of the story and said the department was lying because due process was not followed in detaining an American citizen. Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt said Naqvi’s family was lying, as there was no record of Naqvi being detained. Reed Showalter, the Democratic congressional candidate in Illinois, said the administration was lying because he was with the family when Naqvi was missing. “I’ve been on the ground about this whole thing. The scary thing is not only is this administration disappearing people. But the whole time they were in detention, the official story was that they were actually being released. While Sunny was in Broadview, Illinois, and her phone showed her location there, ICE claimed they had never seen any woman.”
When she was released onto the street in Juneau, Wisconsin from another ICE detention center, they claimed she had never been detained. “People don’t just come to the ICE facility in Juneau, Wisconsin,” Showalter wrote.
