'Jana Nayagan' Release Date: Vijay's film is stuck between CBFC conditions and OTT platform release deadline

The release of Vijay starrer ‘Jana Nayagan’ has entered another crucial phase following the latest updates on its censor certificate and theatrical release plans. The much-awaited film has been in the limelight for months due to delays.

Latest reports suggest that the manufacturers are now juggling multiple demands before setting the final release date. The film’s release strategy has become more complex with the censorship process and conversations involving distributors and the broadcast partner.

CBFC proposed changes to certify ‘Jana Nayagan’

As reported by Filmibeat, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has given ‘Jana Nayagan’ an ‘A’ certificate for its violence, political content and religious references. The CBFC committee, comprising a few members and a screening officer, is said to have recommended some amendments, muted some dialogues and sought changes to the name of the character played by Priyamani, as it is said to match that of a real government official.

The report also notes that game makers are expected to make the required modifications before submitting again under Rule 33.

It is also claimed that the final version will include the title card ‘The Honorable Chief Minister’ along with Vijay’s name, apart from minor changes in the songs and the farewell launch audio clip in the end credits.

The OTT platform and distributors differ on the release date

The report also claims that discussions are on regarding the theatrical release date of the film.

While distributors prefer to release the film on July 24 to avoid conflict with Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” and to allow more time for promotions and theatrical scheduling, the film’s OTT partner is reportedly pushing for a July 16 theatrical release. The reason is said to be the platform’s plan to premiere the film during the August 15 Independence Day weekend after completing its theatrical window.

The producer is expected to make the final decision after considering both aspects.

Vijay farewell movie

‘Jana Nayagan’ is directed by H. Vinoth and was announced to be Vijay’s last film, in which he turned his full attention to politics. The film features a star-studded cast, including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Priyamani, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Mamitha Baiju and Naren in the lead roles. With Anirudh Ravichander composing the music, the film remains one of the biggest Tamil releases of the year, and fans are now eagerly awaiting an official announcement on its censor status and release date.
