A six-year-old girl was killed and her grandmother injured when a speeding car collided with the auto-rickshaw they were traveling in, causing it to overturn in Delhi’s Janakpuri on Tuesday morning. The elderly woman now said no one stopped to help her as she begged for help while her granddaughter was covered in blood.

Police said Thursday that the car’s driver was heading to work at the time of the accident and was arrested. The girl was traveling to school with her grandmother, Mercy Xavier (57), when the accident occurred near Block C in Janakpuri, as mentioned in an earlier HT report.

“She begged the driver to take her to the hospital”: Janakpuri accident victim
The girl’s maternal grandmother said that the rickshaw driver was moving slowly, but a fast car collided with the rickshaw, and the three fell after that.
“The e-rickshaw driver was driving very gently. Suddenly, a speeding white car collided with our e-rickshaw, and all three of us fell. I begged the auto driver to take my child to the hospital in his car. But he ran away,” she told news agency PTI.
The girl’s mother said that she received a call from a hospital employee informing her of the accident and her mother’s desperate calls for help on the road, to which no one responded.
The mother said: “I stopped three or four cars and asked for help, but no one stopped.” It was the nurse who took her daughter to the hospital with the help of another person.
“If help had come sooner, things might have been different,” she said.
Neighbors described the child as cheerful. Georgina, a neighbour, told the news agency: “Her grandmother used to drop her off at school and pick her up. We saw her. She was very happy. She has an older sister, and they live with their parents and grandparents.”

The case was registered and the accused: the police, was arrested
The girl was declared brain dead at the hospital, but her family took her and her maternal grandmother to Max Hospital in Dwarka, where she succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), Dharade Sharad Bhaskar, told HT.
The police said that the child suffered several injuries to her head and chest, while Mercy was injured after falling on the road.
“During treatment, the victim was declared brought dead at Max Hospital and her post-mortem examination was conducted at DDU Hospital,” the DCP said.
Authorities said they have filed a case under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for causing death by negligence and rash driving against the car driver.
The accused driver, identified as Sanjeev Dabas, a resident of Majra Dabas, was heading to work when the accident occurred. Police said he works as a laboratory assistant in a pathology laboratory.
“The offending vehicle was seized and the driver was arrested and restrained on Wednesday. Further investigations are underway,” the DCP added.
