'It's been 5 days': Darren Sammy hits panic button as Middle East tensions leave West Indies stranded in India

New Delhi: The West Indies cricket team is facing travel issues after their exit from the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India. Due to escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, many airspaces in the Gulf region have been restricted, forcing airlines to cancel or reroute their flights.

As a result, the West Indies team was stuck in India for several days without clear information about when they could return home.

Head coach Darren Sammy expressed his frustration on social media as the uncertainty continues. “I just want to go home,” he had written earlier today. In another post a few hours later, he wrote: “At least an update, tell us something. Today, next week. It’s been 5 days,” highlighting the anxiety within the team.

Earlier, Cricket West Indies confirmed that the team’s travel plans had been postponed as airlines were avoiding the affected airspace due to safety concerns. The Council said in a statement, “These restrictions are a direct result of the security threats posed by military action in the Gulf region, which has affected many international flight routes and required airlines to modify scheduled services for safety reasons.”

The board also reassured fans that the safety of players and staff is the top priority and that it is working with the International Cricket Council and other authorities to arrange a safe return. “CWI is working closely with the International Cricket Council (ICC), relevant government authorities and airline partners to secure the closest possible safe travel arrangements for the team and support staff,” the statement added. The West Indies were eliminated after losing to the Indian national cricket team at Eden Gardens. India chased down 195 with a powerful unbeaten 97 from Sanju Samson.
