KOLKATA: Lucknow Super Giants’ Aiden Markram is not the type who is going to go out there and start hitting sixes. It does its job without much flamboyance but delivers what is needed. Excerpts from a conversation with the South African white-ball captain.

..LSG has three players who have captained their national team in Vic, Nicholas Boran and Mitch Marsh. Are you captain? Rishabh Pant Ideas bounce with you?Yes he does. It’s always a good balance because it’s his team and he wants to do it his way, which is important. The nice thing is that when there’s a little bit of uncertainty or when he needs an opinion, he reaches out to me and Mitch and Nikki, and obviously (strategic advisor) Ken Williamson.

Al-Shami reveals what makes LSG special after the big win

Pant seems to be doing well…Any team that sacks Rishabh is a better team. He is an absolute artist with serious ability. He always wants to lead from the front.

He has a lot of pride in his performance. You can’t keep a good player down for too long.Unlike last year, LSG doesn’t have any injury problems this time around…Definitely better than last year. We’ve seen really good things from the pace of attack in the first two games. It is clear that the addition of (Mohamed) Al-Shami, with his ability and experience, is huge.Al-Shami was brilliant in the last match. There’s really no one like him. Having him in the team and having him share that knowledge with some of the younger players like Prince Yadav and Mayank (Yadav) is invaluable.

I have evolved as a T20 player…It was more about understanding my role. You now have a lot of players playing T20 cricket who can hit sixes off the first ball. My way of doing things may look a little different. You’re still playing Test cricket, you can’t develop the technical side of T20. I have to work with what I have and that’s more about trying to hit good cricket shots and trusting that it will work out on the day. So there may be fewer sixes but if I can still bat at the desired rate, that makes me happy. You are known to be very quiet. Did you lose your temper on the field?naturally. You are only human. I think over a period of time, if you don’t perform, you get very frustrated. It happened when I was a little younger. Over time, I’ve settled down. I remember having conversations with Hashim Amla about this and he just said that cricket is one of the reasons we live, but it is not the only reason. Trying to maintain consistency, whether you are well or not, is important as a human being. This is what I strive to manage now.Can you name 136 at the World Trade Center the most specific hit? This will be one of the most wonderful days of my life. Emotions were volatile for both teams, and of course we were striving to achieve the first title. To do this in a place like Lourdes, with our friends and family, was special. It is a memory that will live with me forever. What is your opinion Rajasthan RoyalsYouth editorial Vaibhav Suryavanshi? It’s incredible to watch, to be fair. If I try to go back to when I was 15, I think it would have been better if I could get the ball inside the four. He is coming out in the IPL and hitting sixes. He is absolutely fearless. You acknowledge that, and you respect it. I am sure he will have a great future ahead of him and we will have a lot of cricket fans glued in front of the TV.
