72nd National Film Awards: Winners will be announced today at 5:30 pm; Popular 2024 movies await judgment
The winners of the 72nd National Film Awards will be announced today at 5:30 pm, with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting scheduled to unveil the results at the National Media Center in New Delhi.
The announcement will also be broadcast live on PIB India’s YouTube channel.These prestigious awards are India’s highest official recognition for cinematic excellence. Each year, they honor outstanding achievement in feature films, non-fiction films, and writing in film. Awards are also presented in categories including acting, directing, screenplay, music, cinematography, editing and several artistic disciplines.
The jury led by Jayaraj completes the evaluation
The selection process was done by an 11-member jury headed by renowned director Jayaraj. The committee examined submissions from different regions of the country before preparing its final recommendations.After extensive discussions and evaluations, the jury submitted its recommendations to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which will officially announce the winners today.The National Film Awards continue to recognize artistic merit, storytelling and technical excellence across India’s diverse film industries.
The awards celebrate achievements regardless of language or commercial performance, giving equal importance to creative and technical contributions.
Many famous films are in competition
The 2024 eligibility period included a wide range of hit films across Indian cinema. Commercial blockbusters like Stree 2, Pushpa 2: The Rule, Manjummel Boys, Premalu and Hanu Man enjoyed great theatrical runs and became some of the biggest hits of the year.On the other hand, world-famous films including ‘All We Imagine As Light’ and ‘Laapataa Ladies’ have been widely appreciated for their storytelling and have gained global recognition.The final list of winners will reveal the films and directors that impressed the jury across the many award categories.
Presentations are more likely to attract attention
Many shows from the eligibility period generated strong appreciation from critics and audiences alike. Mammootty received praise for his performance in ‘Bramayugam’, while Prithviraj Sukumaran received plaudits for his survival drama ‘Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life’. Kartik Aaryan also received widespread appreciation for portraying the lead role in Chandu Champion.Among the actresses, Sai Pallavi impressed viewers with Amaran, while Alia Bhatt received praise for Jigra. Yami Gautam received appreciation for ‘Article 370’, Shraddha Kapoor received positive responses for ‘Stree 2’ and Kani Kusruti received widespread acclaim with her performances in ‘All We Imagine As Light’ and ‘Girls Will Be Girls’.
The announcement was delayed by about two weeks
This year’s announcement comes after a delay of about two weeks. Previous reports indicated that the judging panel needed additional time to complete the evaluation process before determining the winners.
Scheduling commitments in which a small number of jury members participated also contributed to the postponement.During the delay, media organizations and industry observers were advised to avoid speculation until the selection process was completed. With the deliberations now over, the Ministry is ready to officially announce the winners in the various categories.Only films that have been certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) between January 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024 are eligible for this edition of the National Film Awards.
