5 The Odyssey adaptations to watch before Christopher Nolan's epic hits theaters

Homer’s Odyssey has been the definitive blueprint for cinematic storytelling for more than a century, inspiring generations of filmmakers with its timeless themes of adventure, survival, and homecoming.

Now the ancient saga is set to receive its most ambitious cinematic interpretation yet with Christopher Nolan’s upcoming sci-fi epic, supported by an impressive ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong’o.Before audiences embark on Nolan’s journey, here are five screen adaptations of “The Odyssey” worth revisiting.

1. “Brother, where are you?” (2000)

Set in 1930s Mississippi, this Coen Brothers gem follows Ulysses Everett McGill, played by George Clooney, who is on the run from a chain gang with his gullible colleagues Pete and Delmar on the pretext of finding hidden treasure.

In reality, Everett is racing to prevent his wife, Penny, from marrying someone else. Along the way, they accidentally become popular radio stars, encounter three sirens in a river, and are robbed by a one-eyed Bible salesman.

Famously, the Coen Brothers claimed to have never read “The Odyssey,” and yet they somehow built a brilliant, brilliant masterpiece around it. If you haven’t watched it yet, Amazon Prime Video is waiting for you.

2. “The Odyssey” (1997)

This visually ambitious television series remains one of the most faithful screen adaptations ever made. The film stars Armand Assante as Odysseus, and follows his perilous ten-year journey home after the Trojan War, led by the goddess Athena, played by Isabella Rossellini. Featuring elaborate sets, large-scale battles, and fantasy elements that were impressive for television at the time, the series brought Homer’s Odyssey to life for a new generation of viewers.

The full miniseries is available to stream on YouTube for those ready to commit to the full ride.

3. “Ulysses” (1954)

One of the earliest major film adaptations of “The Odyssey,” this Italian-American epic stars Kirk Douglas as Ulysses. After the Trojan War, the warrior king was cursed by the gods to wander the seas, and he eventually came ashore with severe amnesia. As he slowly regains his memory, he recalls his encounters with the giant Titan Polyphemus and the witch Circe. While returning to Ithaca, his wife Penelope stopped by a palace full of suitors.

Blending classic mythology with grand old Hollywood spectacle, it’s a historical 1950s adventure film. A piece of cinema history worth following on Dailymotion.

4. “Ludicia” (1968)

This popular Italian television series, directed by Franco Rossi, is one of the most poetic and textually precise adaptations of Homer’s epic ever produced. Rather than relying on fantasy spectacle, the series has maintained an established literary tone while faithfully recreating iconic episodes, including encounters with Cyclops, Circe, Circe, and Calypso.

The film received widespread praise for its performances and storytelling, but it remains the definitive version of the tale.

For purists who want Homer done right, it’s on YouTube.

5. “Odysseus: Journey to the Underworld”

This dark fantasy brings an action-packed twist to “The Odyssey.” Starring Arnold Vosloo as Odysseus, the film begins after the Trojan War when the legendary warrior and his men become trapped on a mysterious island ruled by supernatural forces. Unlike traditional adaptations, this version leans heavily into horror and mythological fantasy, turning the journey into a battle against monstrous creatures, curses, and the terrifying underworld itself.

For those who like their mythology with a darker edge, it’s available on Dailymotion.Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” arrives in July 2026.
