New Delhi: Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has ruled out MS Dhoni’s return for Chennai Super Kings’ big IPL 2026 clash against Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday. Dhoni has not played any matches this season as he is recovering from a calf injury, and fans were hoping that he would finally return to participate in one of the biggest competitions in the tournament.

Earlier, CSK’s batting coach Michael Hussey said that Dhoni is “very close” to a return, sparking excitement among fans. However, Ashwin feels that the former India captain is unlikely to feature in the match. It is also believed that Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, may continue to remain unavailable. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said: “I don’t know anything about Rohit Sharma, but Dhoni will not play 100 percent, I don’t think so.
He can surprise too because he’s that kind of guy, but I don’t think Dhoni will play.He also added, “I think Rohit will not play either, but it is a good opportunity for Suryakumar Yadav to get back to his form as he will not get a better wicket to bat.” Ashwin believes the Chipauk pitch could be excellent for batting, giving struggling batsmen like Suryakumar a strong chance to regain confidence.
Ashwin supports Sarfaraz Khan at number three
Apart from discussing injuries, Ashwin also shared his thoughts on Chennai Super Kings’ batting order.
He said CSK should continue to give Sarfraz Khan a consistent role at number three after Aayush Mhatre was ruled out of the tournament due to injury. According to Ashwin, Sarfaraz has been one of Chennai’s best performers this season and deserves stability in the squad.“I’m just saying one thing, Chennai should install Sarfraz Khan at No. 3. Don’t leave him in play because he has been your best batsman this season apart from Sanju Samson. So, install him at No. 3,” Ashwin said.
