'Back to normal cricket': Jofra Archer issues warning to India after IPL batting paradise

England paceman Jofra Archer believes bowling in English conditions is a welcome return to ‘normal cricket’ after the batting-friendly surfaces and shorter boundaries of the Indian Premier League (IPL), and issued a subtle warning to India’s young batting unit after their crushing defeat in the third T20I.Archer’s comments came after England beat India by 125 runs at Trent Bridge, with the visitors bowled out for just 76 in pursuit of 202. The Barbados-born player made quick figures of 3/29, while Josh Tong took 4/38 as England took a 2-0 lead in the five-match series after losing the opener.

“Here the margin of error is greater.”

Asked how his plans against Indian batsmen differed from those in the IPL, Archer said the English conditions allowed the bowlers to stick to traditional methods rather than constantly worrying about slim margins.“I think it goes back to nature here. You try to bowl the ball straight with a good length. Whereas over there, because the wicket is so easy and the boundaries are so small, you have to be really accurate. Here, I feel your margin of error is a little bit bigger,” Archer said.Archer also suggested that England always felt their total of 201 would be enough, unlike in the Indian Premier League where totals of 200+ are often chased.

“In the Indian Premier League, sometimes 200 is not safe. With 200 on the board on that wicket, I don’t want to say we were confident, but I felt it would take a really special innings to chase it down,” he added. He credited the English bowling unit for delivering the collective performance.“I’m very happy with everyone’s participation. Everyone who bowled got a wicket today, so it was a complete bowling performance,” he said.

“It’s so far” against Sooryavanshi

Archer’s battle with Rajasthan Royals teammate Vaibhav Suryavanshi has remained one of the biggest talking points. The 15-year-old announced himself by smashing Archer for a first-ball six on his T20I debut in Manchester. However, at Trent Bridge, Archer responded emphatically, dismissing the teenager at 145kph after Suryavanshi scored 13 runs.“Well, so far I guess,” Archer said, laughing at the growing competition. “But we still have two more games to go and it could go either way, so hopefully the best man wins.”Archer also played down suggestions that India was overwhelmed by the sheer pace.“No, not really. I think we played well in Manchester. None of us got a wicket to show for there, so we’re glad we got something today,” he said.He added that discipline was more important than speed. “Honestly, I don’t think it was that fast,” he said. “Maybe it was a little faster, but there was strong wind, so honestly I didn’t really feel like it was out of control.”India, led by Shreyas Iyer in the post-World Cup transition period, are still searching for their first T20I win after Suryakumar Yadav’s success as captain. They will look to keep the series alive when the fourth T20I is played in Bristol on Thursday before the final in Southampton on Saturday.
