Alexander Zverev reaches Wimbledon final for the first time, says: 'I have to believe in myself' ahead of title clash

Alexander Zverev beats Arthur Ferry and reaches the Wimbledon final for the first time

After winning his first Grand Slam title at the French Open, Alexander Zverev booked his place in his first Wimbledon final after defeating Britain’s Arthur Ferry 7-6 (7-0), 6-2, 6-4 on Friday. The German admitted that Wimbledon has always been the toughest Grand Slam for him, but he is now just one win away from lifting the trophy.

“These Grand Slams have always been what I struggled with the most and suddenly I was in the Wimbledon final,” the 29-year-old said. “We have one more game left on Sunday and that’s what we’re focusing on.”Zverev, who won his first title at Roland Garros last month, will face either defending champion Jannik Sinner or seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic in the final on Sunday. He said that he is confident of himself despite the challenge that awaits him.“Things will not be easy, regardless of the opponent,” Zverev said. “But I have to believe in myself and I have to believe in my ability to win and that’s what I’ll do.”Zverev also became the first German to reach the Wimbledon final since Boris Becker in 1995.Despite Arthur Ferry’s dream career being ended, Zverev praised the British wildcard and predicted a bright future for the 114th-ranked player.“I think this was just the beginning of his career and I truly believe he will do amazing things in this sport,” he said.

Zverev also praised the Wimbledon crowd, who strongly supported the home favorite throughout the match.“I know that 99.99% of the spectators in the stadium wanted Arthur to win,” Zverev said. “But the atmosphere was still amazing. The crowd was fair, too.” “A lot of fans in the world can look up to this crowd. It is one of the best crowds to play tennis in front of.”
