Two people have been arrested after a three-member gang sexually assaulted a woman at knifepoint near Ernakulam Junction railway station, officials said on Friday.
The arrested accused have been identified as Danish (26), a resident of Varkala in Thiruvananthapuram district, and Rahul (39), a resident of Paravur in Kollam district.
Police officials said they are searching for the main accused Sanjay, a resident of Arur in Alappuzha district.
According to police, the incident occurred on the night of May 5 when the victim was talking to her friend near a closed hotel near Ernakulam Junction railway station.
Officials said the accused approached them and attacked the victim’s girlfriend, then threatened the woman with a knife before sexually assaulting her.
Police said the accused also removed the victim’s clothes during the attack.
However, the woman was able to escape from the place and went to a nearby store to seek help.
The police were immediately notified, and the victim was taken to the police station.
Officials said that the accused were highly intoxicated at the time of the incident and went into hiding shortly after the attack.
Police registered a case on May 6 on charges including rape, disrobing a woman, criminal intimidation and theft.
The accused were later arrested in the city, while efforts are on to trace Sanjay, police said.
The accused were brought before the court and referred to pretrial detention.
