“I’m very emotional right now. I just want to say goodbye to my daughter first,” Navnidhi Sharma, Twisha’s father, said minutes before the last rites were over.

Family members said that Twisha’s mother-in-law, Gribala Singh, and her husband, Samarth Singh, were not allowed to attend the cremation ceremony.

Twisha was found dead on May 12 at her marital home in Katara Hills area of Bhopal. Her family accused Giripala Singh and Samarth Singh of harassing her over her dowry demands.

Later, the family approached the Madhya Pradesh High Court in Jabalpur for a second autopsy, alleging flaws in the investigation and initial report. As directed by the court, the procedure was conducted under security guard at AIIMS Bhopal.

Samarth Singh was arrested in Jabalpur on Friday, after remaining on the run, and was remanded in seven-day police custody by a local court in Bhopal for further interrogation from May 23 to 29.

Twisha’s family is in the case

Ashish Sharma also made strong statements against Samarth Singh’s family, claiming responsibility in the case and demanding accountability.

He added, “They (the accused’s family) themselves are responsible for this entire incident, so if they come forward honestly and truthfully, they should state their facts clearly. That will be enough for them, because compensation cannot be provided now.”

His remarks came as a team of senior doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhopal is conducting the second autopsy on Twisha Sharma, following directions from the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

Earlier, Twisha’s father Navnidhi Sharma said that the AIIMS team assured the family of a fair and impartial autopsy.

He said: “We hope that the team will reach good results because the main goal of the second autopsy is for someone to feel something is missing.”

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Saturday registered a suo motu case titled “In relation to alleged institutional bias and procedural discrepancies in the unnatural death of a young woman in the matrimonial home”. A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant is expected to hear the matter on Monday.
