Incident overview
A 75-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly sexually harassing his daughter-in-law in Gomati district of Tripura state, police said on Saturday.
Status recording
A case was registered against the man under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on Friday based on a complaint filed by the survivor’s mother.
Allegations of abuse
Police officers said that the complainant alleged that her daughter was subjected to physical torture and sexual harassment at the hands of her father-in-law for a long period, while the rest of the family members remained silent.
Community response
The officers added that the survivor’s husband died by suicide on Thursday. The next day, local villagers beat the man, dressed him in shoes, and then handed him over to the police.
Investigation status
“The accused was detained on Friday and the case is being investigated,” a police officer said.
Investigation into abetment to suicide
He added that the police are also investigating the incitement to suicide angle.
