Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Jehangir Khan was arrested near the Indo-Nepal border on Monday in connection with an extortion case, police said. The arrest comes after Khan was allegedly evading law enforcement agencies for several days amid multiple criminal investigations.

Khan, a prominent political figure from South 24 Parganas district, was arrested after a coordinated operation by the West Bengal Police. Officials said he will be produced before court and questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
Arrested near Nepal border after days of escaping police
According to the police, Khan has been on the run since several cases were registered against him and his companions. Investigators tracked his movements and eventually arrested him near the Indo-Nepal border in north Bengal.
The arrest represents a major breakthrough for investigators who were searching for the TMC leader in connection with allegations of extortion, intimidation and other criminal activities.
Multiple cases linked to extortion and violence
Khan is facing scrutiny due to a series of complaints made by local residents and political opponents. The cases reportedly include allegations of extortion, assault, threats and election-related violence.
Authorities are looking into complaints from residents in the Valta region, where Khan has long been considered an influential political leader. Police officials did not reveal full details of the charges, but said the investigation was continuing.
Colleagues are also under the scanner
The arrest comes after action was taken against several people close to Khan. In recent weeks, police arrested Israfil Chakdar, the panchayat president and a known associate of Khan, in connection with allegations of extortion and intimidation.
Investigators believe the cases may be linked and are examining whether a larger network was involved in the alleged crimes. Officials indicated that more arrests may be made as the investigation progresses.
Political controversy in Valta
The Valta constituency has been at the center of political controversy in recent months after allegations of violence and intimidation during the election period. These developments have caught the attention of both the ruling party and the opposition.
Amid these mounting allegations, Khan approached the Calcutta High Court seeking protection from coercive measures, arguing that multiple criminal cases have been registered against him. Legal proceedings continue separately.
