“Gusty winds (40-60 km/h) are very likely to prevail over Delhi and the entire NCR during the next two hours,” the Meteorological Department said in a post on X website.

This came hours after the regional meteorological center expected light rain accompanied by light thunderstorms and lightning in some areas of the capital and its suburbs. However, the India Meteorological Department did not issue any alerts for rain and thunderstorms in the capital on Sunday.

The IMD expects rain to fall in Delhi on Monday, as the rainy spell continues in northern India

The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast light to light rain, accompanied by gusts and thunderstorms, in the capital on Monday afternoon and evening.

The recent spell of rainfall has brought relief from the sweltering heat in Delhi and northern India. The rain spell will continue over northern India over the next week until June 19, with rains along with thunderstorms and gusty winds likely in northern states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab over the next week as well.

In its bulletin, the Meteorological Department predicted scattered rain in Delhi from June 13 to 19. The sky was expected to be partly cloudy with thunder and lightning on Sunday.

Meanwhile, due to the recent spell of rain, the capital recorded a maximum temperature of 38.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday, 1.4 degrees below the seasonal average. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to settle around 39 and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively. The maximum temperatures recorded at major weather stations in Delhi on Sunday ranged between 38.4 and 39.1 degrees Celsius. The base station, Safdarjung, recorded a maximum temperature of 38.5 degrees Celsius, while the temperature at The Ridge was the hottest at 39.1 degrees Celsius.

Humidity levels increase, and rainfall may decrease

According to weather experts, Delhi may feel uncomfortable due to rising humidity levels in the coming days, despite a respite from the heat, PTI reported.

Over the past few days, the capital has witnessed a wave of thunderstorms, lightning and rain due to the impact of western disturbances centered over the hills. However, the system is now turning away. As it weakens and shifts away, its impact on Delhi will diminish, starting Sunday.

Maximum temperatures are also expected to gradually rise in the coming days, PTI reported, citing weather experts.
