Soumitra was taken to court by the West Bengal Police when the attack took place after he was arrested on a complaint by BJP leader Ravi Keshari accusing him of attacking BJP workers.

The photos show several people, who appear to be angry, throwing several eggs at Sumitra as soon as he went out to enter the police car. The attack did not stop until the police intervened and dispersed the crowd. In his defense, Sumitra bent his neck and tried to protect himself with his hands and managed to enter the police car.

This is not the first time eggs have been thrown at the TMC leader. In fact, this has become a recurring theme, especially after the party suffered a crushing defeat in the recent West Bengal assembly polls against the BJP.

He attacked TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh with eggs

On Monday evening, eggs were thrown at TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh outside party president Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat in south Kolkata as soon as he came out. Following this, Gosh filed a complaint with Kalighat police station and urged immediate action against the accused.

On Tuesday, Kolkata Police arrested two people in connection with the incident. Ghosh identified the accused as Chandan Singh and Ravi Koyal, and said the police had confirmed to him their arrest.

“The worrying thing is that the police may grant bail today on a minor charge. I told the station that wouldn’t fly,” Ghosh wrote in a post on X.

“The CID’s search of Mamata Banerjee’s house – where this criminal went as a witness – is now under investigation due to allegations of an attack right in front of her house,” he added.

It started with Abhishek Banerjee

The horror of white attacks on TMC leaders began with party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and is at the heart of the crisis the party is currently facing. On May 30, he was allegedly attacked with stones and eggs in Sonarpur during a visit to meet families affected by alleged post-election violence, causing minor injuries. Videos from the scene showed a group of people treating the TMC leader amid loud cheers.

He was also pushed and harassed when he was attacked by a crowd of people shouting slogans of “Cor, Cor.”

Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha and Congress member Rahul Gandhi came to Abhishek’s defense at the time and extended support, calling the attack “completely reprehensible”.

Abhishek described the incident as “political violence and state-sponsored terrorism” and expressed his gratitude to Rahul Gandhi for standing by him.

Eggs aren’t the only problem

Flying eggs aren’t the only problem the TMC is dealing with. The party faces a broader crisis and struggles to keep its identity alive. President Mamata Banerjee and General Secretary Abhishek are locked in battles on multiple fronts, with MLAs and MLAs breaking ranks to form separate factions.
