Thousands of people, including political leaders, academics, religious representatives, supporters of the deceased and his family members, gathered at Nongesed Land earlier in the day to attend the funeral ceremony.

A huge tribute was paid to Singkun, who was also the founding Secretary-General of the People’s Voice Party.

The state government had declared a public holiday on Saturday as a mark of respect to the Shillong MP and to enable people to attend his last rites.

Shops and financial institutions here in the state capital were mostly closed during the morning hours, and traffic was light as residents celebrated the solemn occasion.

VPP president Ardent M Basaiawmoit paid tribute to Singkun, describing him not only as a colleague but also as a close friend and confidant.

Basayaomwit said Singkun inspired him to enter electoral politics and champion the cause of clean, people-centred politics.

The VPP president said his absence would be deeply felt within the party and the wider political community.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also offered his condolences on the MP’s death. A condolence message was read from the Office of the Speaker of Parliament during the funeral ceremony.

Basayaomwit also read condolence messages from party members and expressed his gratitude to those who came to pay their respects.

Sengkun, 54, died on February 19 after collapsing while playing futsal, and was later pronounced dead at hospital.

Elected to the Lok Sabha in 2024 on a VPP ticket, he was known for his grassroots outreach and advocacy on governance issues.
