Women beneficiaries under the ‘Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai’ program in Tamil Nadu on Friday received the pending May installment of… $$1,000, allaying concerns about a possible delay after Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s office said the government needed time to “restructure” the scheme.

These statements raised questions about the future of the social welfare program, especially since the new government promised to increase the amount of monthly assistance to $2500. Earlier in the day, Vijay said $1,000 installments will be added to beneficiaries “as soon as possible.” The amount was deposited on the scheduled date of the month – the 15th.

What CM Vijay said about increasing the amount

The Prime Minister’s Office said on Thursday that the women are currently continuing to receive the current monthly assistance $1000 under the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Scheme.

A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said the newly elected government needs time to restructure the scheme before implementing the promised boost in aid.

According to the CMO, Vijay will make a detailed announcement later in May 2026 regarding the restructuring process, including potential revisions linked to beneficiaries’ bank accounts and the proposed increase in monthly payments.

Stalin questions the delay in disbursement

The announcement sparked a sharp reaction from DMK chief M K Stalin, who questioned why additional time was needed for a scheme that was already working under the previous regime.

In a social media post, Stalin asked the government what kind of “restructuring” it intends to implement and why the amount was not deposited on the usual date of the 15th of the month.

Vijay also reminded that the TVK government promised to continue the welfare measures introduced earlier.

“I announced the bid $2500 (per month for women, TVK survey guarantee). He delays without giving $“1,000 changes (TVK promised),” Stalin said.

What CM Vijay promised before the elections

Ahead of the April 23 National Assembly elections, Vijay’s party, the Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), promised a major expansion of financial aid to women.

During the campaign, Vijay announced that if voted to power, the party would launch the ‘Madhippumigu Magalir Thittam’, under which women heads of families below the age of 60 would get… $2500 every month.

The Promise is positioned as an improved luxury model compared to the current model $1000 assistance scheme was introduced during the DMK regime.

What is Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Chart?

Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Scheme has been launched to provide monthly financial assistance to women heads of households in Tamil Nadu. The program aims to recognize the ongoing unpaid work that women do in managing households and supporting families.

Under this scheme, eligible women will receive: $1000 every month directly into their bank accounts.

It is worth noting that eligible families must have an annual income less than this $2.5 lakh. They must also have less than five acres of wetland or less than 10 acres of dryland.

The scheme considers all individuals included in the ration card as one family unit. The female head of household mentioned on the ration card is treated as the “head of the household” eligible for assistance.

Families with more than one woman over the age of 21 can choose one applicant. Single women, widows and transgender persons who are heads of their families are also eligible under this programme.

Another eligibility criterion is that annual household electricity consumption must remain less than 3,600 units.

Families become ineligible if any member exceeds the established annual income limit $2.5 lakh.
