The decision was taken after a virtual meeting of the Congress held late on Tuesday night to decide on TVK’s request for support to form the government in Tamil Nadu. HT has learnt that the Tamil Nadu Congress Political Affairs Committee was convened at 10:30 pm yesterday by the AICC in-charge to take the final decision on extending support to Vijay.
TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. The Congress, which contested the elections as part of the DMK-led alliance, won five seats.
Vijay thanks the people of TN for the historic mandate
Late on Tuesday, Vijay thanked the people of Tamil Nadu for providing what he called a “historic and transformative mandate” to the Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) in the April 23 Assembly elections.
He described the ruling as a “miracle” that shook Indian politics, and credited young voters for the party’s impressive performance. He stressed that youth enthusiasm and participation played a crucial role in shaping the outcome, signaling a shift in the political landscape in Tamil Nadu and strengthening the rise of TVK as a strong alternative.
Swearing-in ceremony
Vijay is likely to be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 7, reported ANI. The swearing-in ceremony is expected to be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.

Tamil Nadu government formation news live: ‘We have never failed Congress,’ says DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai
Tamil Nadu Government Formation News LIVE: Regarding Congress’ decision to support TVK, DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai said: “We wish Vijay good luck when he takes oath on May 7. Congress has offered its support to TVK, which is why we are calling it a backstab…”
“Congress has decided to reverse its position and support TVK, and the reasons they have given are not convincing. They are saying they want to keep the BJP and RSS at bay, which is why this call should be made… This is a sincere decision by Congress, which is likely to send ripples across the country meaning there are other alliance partners. If Congress is going to become untrustworthy, within just a day of the results, they are openly going against the mandate. Will this create an impact in the minds of Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, And Uddhav Thackeray and all the others? We have never failed in Congress…”

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Live: VS Babu attributes victory over Stalin to Vijay, local Connect
Tamil Nadu Government Formation News LIVE: MLA-elect from Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), V S Babu, who defeated outgoing Chief Minister MK Stalin in Kolattur constituency, attributed the victory to party president Vijay and a local connection.
On the anti-incumbency factor, VS Babu said his victory came on the back of people’s desire for change in Tamil Nadu.
“I won only with our leader. The face of our leader is the face of Tamil Nadu. People wanted change, and they changed this. I was born and brought up in that area. We know the pulse of the people. We are the ones who made him (MK Stalin) enter Kolathur. He does not know anyone in Kolathur. Whether he is the chief minister or an MLA, he should mix with the locals first. People are watching that,” he told ANI on Tuesday.
