Thiruvananthapuram, Southern Railway on Thursday said it recorded significant improvements in operating efficiency during the recently concluded financial year 2025-26.

From introducing more trains to meet the growing demand in passenger traffic, providing additional stops, and accelerating train services, the region has recorded noteworthy achievements in multiple operating areas, it said in a statement.
The Southern Railway introduced 28 pairs of new trains and two one-way services in the financial year 2025-26, the highest in the past 10 years, the statement said.
The new trains include the KSR Bengaluru-Ernakulam Vande Bharat Express and 10 pairs of Amrit Bharat Express trains, which have facilitated faster and more affordable long-distance travel connecting southern India with the northern and eastern parts of the country.
In addition, 12 pairs of Mail/Express trains have been introduced during FY 2025-26, including the fully unreserved Antyodaya Weekly Express train between Thiruvananthapuram North and Mangaluru Junction, the release said.
Seven pairs of commuter multi-unit services and electric mainlines were also introduced, improving suburban and short-distance connectivity.
Southern Railway also made significant service improvements during the year to improve connectivity and passenger comfort across its network.
It said five pairs of trains, along with one one-way service, have been extended to meet emerging passenger demand and enable seamless travel to additional destinations.
Furthermore, the frequency of four pairs of trains has been increased, providing greater flexibility and availability of berths for passengers.
“In a major operational improvement, 98 trains were speeded up, reducing travel time and enhancing the efficiency of services. In addition, 246 new stops were provided at various stations, improving accessibility, especially for passengers from small towns and rural areas,” it said.
Southern Railway also achieved a commendable performance in punctuality during the year, recording 93.22 per cent punctuality overall across mail/express and suburban services, surpassing all other regions, with Western Railway and North Western Railway taking second and third places respectively.
It also said that it has secured the third position among Indian Railways zones in the mail/express sector, achieving punctuality of 91.3 per cent, after Western Railway and North Western Railway.
Punctuality was maintained despite extensive engineering works throughout the area.
