A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the suspected suicide of Confidant Group founder and chairman CJ Roy, police said on Saturday, after the Income Tax authorities found him shot dead at his firm’s office in Bengaluru.

CJ RoyPolice have registered a report of an unusual death at the Ashok Nagar police station and said that while the case is being initially treated as a suicide, investigations are continuing.

City police commissioner Seeman Kumar Singh ordered the formation of the SIT, calling for a “comprehensive and meticulous investigation into the case”. The unit is headed by C Bhamshi Krishna, Joint Commissioner of Police, Western Region. South Division Police Commissioner Lokesh Jagalasar has been designated as the investigating officer. Akshay Heke, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Division, will team up with senior personnel from multiple divisions and special units.

“The Special Investigation Team has been empowered to induct additional officers and resources as necessary for the purpose of investigation,” the official statement said, directing all relevant officers to assist in ensuring a “lawful, expeditious and effective investigation”.

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said the police have started a preliminary investigation and decisions on further action will follow the results. “Several aspects need to be looked into as to what happened before the incident and what led him to take the extreme step. I have directed the police to conduct a detailed investigation. After the report is submitted, the facts will be clear and further decisions will be taken accordingly,” he said.

He added that claims of harassment involving tax inquiries have yet to be examined. “We have not thought about the IT harassment angle at this stage. The team has not yet looked into the IT aspect. If such details come up in the investigation, they will be looked into,” he said.

Family members alleged that Roy was under severe stress in the days leading up to his death. His brother, Babu Roy, said the search at the company’s premises began in December 2025 and that officials came to the office again on January 29, asking Roy to be present the next day. “Krishna Prasad and his team from Income Tax Department came in December 2025. My brother told me many times that the pressure from Income Tax Department is very high. He even spoke to me on January 30th morning. He was under a lot of pressure for the last few days. I am not sure what kind of pressure they put on him, but he has no debt and I have lost any financial problems of my channel,” said brother.

He also confirmed that Roy has a licensed firearm.

A tax official said that Krishnaprasad KK, a joint director (investigation) led the probe in December, but it was not clear whether he was present at the time of Roy’s death. Another official said a junior officer was overseeing the execution of a restraining order.

The official was not available for a comment.

According to Confident Group Managing Director TA Joseph’s statement to police, Roy went to the Langford Road office to make a statement to tax officials. After entering his cabin, Ray later says he wants to talk to his mother. Joseph walked out, and security personnel were told not to let anyone in.

Despite repeated knocks and no response, the staff broke the lock and opened the door. Roy was found sitting up, with blood on his shirt and unresponsive. An ambulance was called, and medical personnel reported no pulse. He was rushed to Narayana Hospital in HSR Layout but could not be revived. Police said he used a licensed gun. Later that night, his body was shifted from a private hospital to Boring and Lady Curzon Hospital for post-mortem.
