Sikkim has now become the 15th state in the country and the third in the North-East to receive the award.

The Chief’s Police Color, also known as ‘Nishan’, is the highest ceremonial honor given to a state or central police force in India in recognition of exceptional service, gallantry and professionalism.

State Police officers honored with the President’s Police Color are permitted to wear a special emblem on their uniform.

Speaking on the occasion, Murmu said, “I am delighted to award the Sikkim Police with the Police Distinguished Service Medal. This honor is a source of pride for all members of the Sikkim Police.”

She lauded the Sikkim Police, which was established in 1897, for its dedication in maintaining law and order in the strategically important state.

Pointing out that the police had a colonial character, as they were created to control people rather than serve them, the President said the mentality must change, and the police must become allies and guides of citizens.

“By adopting the role of ally, trust between the public and the police will increase,” she said.

Murmu called on the police to adopt technology to deal with cybercrimes.

“Now, new challenges are emerging such as cybercrime, online fraud, hacking, and deepfakes,” she added. “To meet these new challenges, the police must become proficient in the latest technologies, cybersecurity, and digital investigation.”

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang lauded the award of Indian Police Colonel to Sikkim Police.

“It is a matter of great pride and deep honor for Sikkim and its police to be awarded the prestigious President’s Police Colour,” he said in a social media post.

Tamang said this distinguished recognition reflects the force’s dedication, discipline, professionalism, courage and selfless service in protecting peace, harmony and security across the state.

“It reflects the force’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and serving people with integrity, compassion and honour,” he said.

The Prime Minister said: “Giving the Police color to the President strengthens our resolve to continue working with dedication and unity for the progress, peace and prosperity of our beloved state and nation.”
