The Kremlin on Tuesday responded to US President Donald Trump’s claim that India would stop buying Russian oil after he announced a trade deal with Washington on Monday, saying it had so far heard nothing of the sort from New Delhi.

Moscow has long proved to be a reliable defense partner of India (Sonu Mehta / HT Archive)Trump on Monday announced a new trade deal with India that includes lower reciprocal tariffs and expanded market access, while demanding that New Delhi stop buying Russian oil and sharply increase imports of American goods.

India confirmed the tariff-reduction part of the deal, a move Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed after a phone call between the two leaders. But there was no talk of stopping buying oil from Moscow.

“So far, we have not heard any statement from New Delhi on this,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, quoted by AFP.
