A case has been registered against one person Navi Mumbai Resident accused of sexually harassing a foreign woman who came here to appear Kochi-Muziris Biennale Art Event, police said on Monday.

According to the FIR registered on February 7, the complainant befriended the accused on January 18 outside Paper House in Fort Kochi, a venue for art events. (Representative picture)According to the police, the case was registered against Sumit Katar based on a complaint filed by a Taiwanese woman, who was in Kochi last month to attend the Kochi-Mujiris Biennale.

Police said the case was registered after the woman submitted the complaint through email after returning from India.

According to the FIR registered on February 7, the complainant befriended the accused on January 18 outside Paper House in Fort Kochi, the venue of the art show.

Although Qatar invited him to consume alcohol, he refused, the FIR said.

Later, on January 19, Katare approached the complainant near the Fort Kochi backwater area and accompanied him on a boat trip.

According to the FIR, during the boat trip in the afternoon, the accused allegedly sexually harassed her by having physical relations.

In her complaint, the woman said that after the boat trip, Katare forced her to travel in an autorickshaw, during which he continued his sexual abuse around 5 pm, police said.

When the victim refused to accompany the accused, he allegedly followed her and sexually assaulted her further, the FIR said.

Fort Kochi Police registered a case under various sections Indian Penal Code For sexual harassment and stalking.

Police said the victim has provided the contact details of the accused, on the basis of which efforts are being made to trace him.

They are trying to contact the victim, as his detailed statement needs to be recorded as part of the investigation.
