More than 10 dead, flooded streets, traffic chaos: monsoon chaos across India amid heavy rains

Heavy monsoon rains caused chaos in several parts of the country on Thursday, flooding streets, causing traffic jams and bringing daily life to a halt. Meanwhile, torrential rains caused widespread destruction, and at least 10 people were confirmed killed in rain-related incidents.

Delhi-NCR rainfall

A spell of heavy rain lashed Delhi and the National Capital Region on Thursday, helping the national capital record its cleanest air since September 2023. However, the heavy rains also caused waterlogging, uprooted trees and traffic jams in several areas.

Waterlogging was reported in several areas, including parts of East Delhi, Sangam Vihar, New Delhi railway station area, Burari, and several others. Traffic was also disrupted on ITO, Rohtak Road and Mehrauli-Badarpur (MB) Road.

Meanwhile, the death toll in the building collapse in Rohini rose to three, according to PTI. Moreover, according to the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), two trees fell at two separate locations at Raja Der Singh Marg in East Kailash, while one tree each fell at Guru Ravidas Marg in Kalkaji-Govindpuri district and Dhingra Marg. Another tree fell on a parked car in Ranjit Nagar.

Widespread waterfall and traffic disruptions were reported in Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad.

In Noida, areas including sectors 12, 16, 33, 62 and parts of the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway were inundated.

After heavy rains, a portion of the road at Vasundhara in Ghaziabad collapsed next to an under-construction basement, sending a parked car and a motorcycle into the hole. It is worth noting that no injuries were reported in the incident.

In Gurugram, part of the balcony of a luxury apartment complex collapsed on Thursday morning, although no casualties were reported.

Rescue operations in Maharashtra

In Maharashtra state, rescue operations continued in Pimpri Chinchwad near Pune after a building collapsed on Wednesday at a waste-to-energy plant. The collapse occurred when a huge pile of rubbish collapsed.

Rescuers recovered one body on Thursday, while around eight people were still feared trapped under the rubble, as mentioned in an earlier HT report.

In Surat, flood waters that caused severe damage began to slowly recede on Thursday. However, six more bodies were recovered from the city, where rain-related incidents have claimed 17 lives over the past few days, PTI reported.

Several deaths in Uttar Pradesh

Rain-related accidents claimed seven lives across Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. A 14-year-old boy lost his life due to a lightning strike in Kushinagar, while two women died in two separate lightning incidents in Sant Kabir Nagar. In Bulandshahr, two people were killed and four others were injured after a wall collapsed on makeshift tents in Mankhedida village in Kharja, officials said.

In Thanabhawan town in Shamli district, a man died and his two sons were injured after the wall of a tin shed collapsed on them.

In Ghaziabad, a three-year-old girl drowned after being swept into a water-filled drain outside her home in Sarvodaya Colony, the officials added.

IMD Alert in Kerala

Kerala witnessed heavy rains in several areas. The death toll in the Wayanad landslide rose to six on Thursday with three more bodies recovered from the disaster site, PTI reported, citing district officials.

Southwest monsoon

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday announced that the southwest monsoon has advanced further into the remaining parts of Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab, covering the entire country.
