An assistant sub-inspector in Maharashtra’s Akola district has been suspended after he allegedly sought “sexual favours” from the daughter of a detainee.

The 54-year-old Asi asked a detained woman to send her daughter to him, news agency PTI quoted police as saying on Wednesday.

The woman was allegedly arrested in connection with a financial fraud case $80 thousand, and was kept at the Civil Lines Police Station.

Assistant Inspector Rajesh Jadhav was on duty on Tuesday when he allegedly misused his position to lure the woman with a financial offer. He also asked her to send her daughter to him for sexual favours, police inspector Anil Gomel told PTI.

According to an India Today report, the officer, who has since been suspended and is on the run, told the detainee: “You are very beautiful; your daughter must be beautiful too. Send her to me, and I will give her to you.” $10,000.”

After the incident, the woman filed a complaint with senior police officials. A video clip appeared on social media showing senior police officers confronting the accused policeman and reprimanding him.

District Police Inspector Archit Chandak suspended the ASI with immediate effect on Tuesday, PTI quoted an official as saying. A case was also filed against the accused on charges of insulting a woman’s modesty and other legal provisions.

Dr Asha Mirg, a former member of the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission, told India Today that complaints against Jadhav had also surfaced in the past. She said there had been reports of family disputes and alleged inappropriate behavior towards women for nearly a decade. “It is deeply worrying that those charged with protection have turned into predators. Timely action is essential to prevent such behavior from continuing,” India Today quoted her as saying. Dr. Mirg also praised the quick action taken by Akola police.
