Kolkata Election 2026 Live Result: Didi Stands, Suvendu Storms or City Surprises? The counting of votes begins

Kolkata Election 2026 Live Result: Both emotionally and politically, Kolkata is at the heart of India’s most competitive legislative elections as West Bengal gears up for counting day on May 4, 2026. The City of Joy has 11 Assembly seats, all of which were won by the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) in the 2021 state elections. But a lot has changed in the past five years, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) now having a tangible presence in the state and its capital.

West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, who has ruled the state for 15 straight years, is once again contesting from Bhabanipur – the South Kolkata constituency that has come to define her political identity. But on the other side of the grid stands the BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, the man who defeated Mamata in Nandigram in 2021. While the opposition leader is fighting his own battle elsewhere, the BJP has invested heavily in him to undo the Kolkata law, which has long eluded the party. On the other hand, the Left and the Congress have become largely irrelevant spectators, diminishing the battle for Kolkata between the TMC and the BJP.

Kolkata Election Result 2026 | Key points

– Votes are being counted for 11 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal’s Kolkata district, along with 283 votes across the state that went to the polls in two phases on April 23 and 29.

The West Bengal Assembly elections are held simultaneously with elections in three other states – Assam, Kerala and Tamil Nadu – and the union territory of Puducherry.

The 11 assembly seats in Kolkata are: Chowrangi, Entali, Beliyagatta, Maniktala, Kashipur-Balagachia, Shyampukur, Jorasanko, Bhabanipur, Rashbehari, Ballygunge, and Kolkata Port.

– Of the 11 seats, Bhabanipur remains the most watched due to the fiery contest between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her old aide-turned-rival Suvendu Adhikari, who is contesting on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket.

– A comfortable win in Bhabanipur could be a strong signal for TMC and Mamata, as this constituency has mixed-race people, while a defeat, or even a narrow win, could come as a shock.

– Kolkata was on the BJP’s priority list as educated, anti-incumbency voters were frustrated by the recent school jobs scam and R G Kar rape and murder case. The BJP made this the focus of their attack. For the TMC, their electoral shield was welfare provision, continuity and banking on the protection of Bengali culture.

-TMC has controlled Kolkata since 2011. But 2026 looks different. By the evening of May 4, West Bengal will know whether Mamata will remain the undisputed ruler of the city or the BJP will finally conquer the citadel to wave the saffron flag in Kolkata.
