A bench of Chief Justice Somin Sen and Justice Syam Kumar VM strongly criticized certain observations in the public interest litigation made by Chandramohanan KC, a retired teacher and social activist, and Mehnaz P Mohammed, a lawyer.

When the matter was taken up, the bench pointed out that the petitions related to the film were pending before a single-judge and division bench and, therefore, it would not be appropriate for it to take up the PIL.

Chief Justice Sen said it would be better if the division bench, which is hearing the appeal filed by the film producers, heard the immediate issue.

However, when she noticed some observations in the PIL, submitted through Advocate Shilson Chembarathi, the Chief Justice was upset and wondered how these comments could be included in the petition.

She criticized the petitioners and their advocates for filing the PIL, after which Advocate Chembarathi apologized unconditionally several times.

Subsequently, the court disposed of the PIL and allowed the petitioners to file a fresh petition after removing the portions that cast disrepute on the division bench, paving the way for the release of the film.

A bench of Justices Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and BV Balakrishnan on February 27 paved the way for the release of the film by staying the order of a single judge on the same day, delaying the film’s release by 15 days.

The interim order issued by the division bench came on the basis of an appeal filed by the film’s producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah.
