The Kerala Assembly on Thursday paid tribute to the 21 people who died in the devastating fire that broke out at a hotel in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area a day ago.

At the beginning of the House proceedings at 9 am, Assembly Speaker Thiruvanchur Radhakrishan referred to the incident and said that of the 21 people who died, 12 were foreigners.
He said that the Council condoles the dead and calls for a speedy recovery for those injured in the fire.
The MLAs also stood in the Assembly and observed a brief silence in honor of those who died in the fire.
The fire started at the Flourish Stay B&B at Hauz Rani in Malviya Nagar around 8.30 am and quickly spread through the narrow five-storey building which has only one entry and exit point, permanently sealed windows and a sensor-activated main door – factors that combined to turn the building into a virtual death trap. Many people in the hotel were caught by surprise because some of them were asleep.
Officials said that at least 58 people were rescued and taken to hospitals, where 21 people were declared dead.
Among the dead were nine Indians, eight of whom were from a large family.
Many of the victims are from Central Asian and African countries. They were staying at the hotel to care for relatives who were admitted to Max Hospital minutes away.
