The victim, an Indian Institute of Technology graduate who was preparing for the civil services exam, was found by her parents when they returned from the gym at around 8am on Wednesday. Her father is a government employee. Her mother is a dentist. Her 25-year-old brother lives and works in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Police have arrested a 23-year-old former domestic help, Rahul Meena, who allegedly strangled the victim with a mobile phone charger cable. The arrest was made from the Dwarka Hotel within hours of the crime.

According to police sources, citing an agency report, the accused told investigators in the case that he went to the house “just to ask for money.” He also allegedly said the rape and murder “just happened.”

The accused reportedly told police, “If Didi had given the money, this would not have happened,” in a matter-of-fact manner during interrogation, ANI reported. According to police, the 23-year-old showed no remorse for the alleged crime.

The accused is referred to pretrial detention for 4 days

Meanwhile, a Delhi court on Thursday sent Rahul Meena to police custody for four days. Chief Justice Dipika Thakaran accepted the Delhi Police’s request seeking four days of custodial interrogation of the accused.

Police said detention is crucial to reconstruct the sequence of events, verify digital and forensic evidence, and determine the full motive behind the crime. During initial interrogation, it came to light that the motive behind the rape, murder and robbery might also be “revenge or grudge he had against the family for letting him go, but we will confirm that after detailed interrogation,” an officer told HT.

According to the officer, the victim’s 55-year-old father told them that the suspect had been working for the family for about 10 months before he was fired two months ago due to his habit of borrowing small amounts from neighbors.

Another alleged rape

According to police officials familiar with the details of the case, Delhi cops found out about the other alleged rape when they reached Alwar to arrest him. Officials said Meena traveled overnight to Delhi in a hired truck and then came directly home.

When the Delhi Police team reached Alwar on Wednesday morning, they were informed that the police received a complaint around 10 pm on Tuesday from a woman – the wife of Meena’s acquaintance – alleging that he had raped her that night.
