What began as a robbery at a temple in the Kutch district of Gujarat, revealed a calculated “theft plan”, with police alleging that the accused used Google Maps to commit the crime.

Police said on Sunday they had arrested two men for allegedly carrying out robberies using Google Maps to locate and target temples.
They arrested Panchabhai Koli of Gedi and Javed Ghanshi of Umaya while they were on their way to Radhanpur to dispose of the stolen jewellery. Acting on a tip-off, officers arrested the duo and recovered jewellery, cash and mobile phones from them, according to a report by India Today.

The investigation was launched after the robbery of the Khudiyar Mata and Ramabir temples in Moti Hamirbhar village, where jewelery worth $1,10,150 were stolen. The report stated that the police said they opened the case within days and led it to the two defendants.
How were the thefts done?
During interrogation, police found that Ghanshi used Google Maps to search for temples in remote areas. After setting targets, the two would go to temples at night and break the locks using a sharp iron tool usually used to cut coconuts. They then steal valuables and leave before being discovered.

Police said the arrests helped them solve several thefts, including incidents reported at the Silari temple. The police are examining whether the duo is involved in more such cases.
Officials said they found 14 silver umbrellas, a silver-like metal snake, money and mobile phones. The total value of the seized property is estimated at approximately $10 lakh. In addition, $2,28,160 cash was also recovered.
The police have registered three cases against Javed Ghanshi and two against Panchabhai Kohli under different sections of the law. This matter is being investigated further.
