Weather report: Active monsoon conditions are likely to continue in northwest and northeast India over the next four to five days, with heavy rains expected in Delhi over the next two days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on Monday. Meanwhile, weak rainfall activity over west-central and south peninsular India will continue for more than a week, the IMD said in its bulletin on Monday.
Parts of Jammu and Kashmir, including Reasi, Rajouri and Udhampur, remained under red alert, according to the IMD Nowcast warning. Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh, and Rohtas and Kaimur in Bihar, are also expected to witness very heavy rains, along with thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds.
Active monsoon conditions are also likely to be witnessed in the next 48 to 72 hours over Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, with rainfall expected to peak till Wednesday (July 22), the Met office said.
“Heavy to very heavy rainfall, exceeding 12 cm, is also likely at isolated places in the northern and eastern parts of Punjab and Haryana during this period,” the Met office said.
Delhi is under yellow alert to experience low temperatures
Delhi, which saw a brief respite on Monday after days of hot and humid temperatures, will see rain and low temperatures, and the IMD has issued a yellow alert for the capital, predicting generally cloudy days with heavy rains on July 21 and 22. Strong surface winds, along with thunderstorms and lightning, are expected to blow in the capital.
Delhi received light rain at isolated places on Monday, with the IMD reporting the highest cumulative rainfall of 5.8 mm at Safdarjung Observatory during a 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature in the capital also remained below normal at all five major weather stations.
Schools closed in parts of Himachal as heavy rains continue; Death toll rises in J&K
Educational institutions in Kangra, Mandi and Sirmaur in Himachal were ordered closed on Tuesday in view of red alert in parts of the state. With heavy rains likely on July 21, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Shimla has issued a red alert for Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi and Sirmur districts, while an orange alert has been issued for Una, Hamirpur and Shimla districts.
In Jammu and Kashmir, the death toll in rain-related incidents rose to 23, as heavy rains caused landslides and flash floods in the union territory. Over the past two days, at least 11 people have been killed in rain-related incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, including a mother and her two children, the agency quoted officials as saying.
