Sonam Wangchuk was “forcibly” taken to hospital

Wangchuk, who is on the 21st day of his hunger strike in Jantar Mantar, was taken to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday by police. DeBakey claimed it was done “by force.”

Students at the protest site claimed that Delhi Police was trying to remove three other protesters who were also on hunger strike for the past 21 days, HT found.

DCP (New Delhi) Sachin Sharma told HT, “Based on the orders of the Hon’ble Supreme Court and on expert medical advice due to deteriorating health condition of Sheikh Sonam Wangchuk, he has been shifted to hospital for basic medical care.

While implementing the orders of the Hon’ble Supreme Court, the protesters tried to create obstruction, causing minor commotion, but the police exercised utmost restraint and carried out the exercise safely. We request the protesters at Jantar Mantar to vacate the place peacefully as soon as possible.”

Abhijeet Deepki demands to be detained by Delhi Police

Debaki later claimed that the police suppressed the peaceful protest site and forcefully took the activist away. The CJP chief, in X, wrote that the Delhi Police used force against the protesters.

“Delhi Police is launching a crackdown on Jantar Mantar. They are beating people and taking Mr. Sonam by force,” he said.

In another post, Debaki claimed that he was assaulted and detained by police. “I have [been] “They were beaten and detained by Delhi Police,” he wrote.

The protesters accused Lathi, the PJD claims

Delhi Police charged students protesting at the site amid developments surrounding Wangchuk’s removal from the protest site, CJP spokesperson Sourav Das claimed.

“Abhijit Deepki was arrested by Delhi Police where he was staying. People told me that Sonam Wangchuk has been arrested from the protest site. The students are being charged!” He claimed he stepped on the X.

Earlier, Debke claimed that several people disrupted the Jantar Mantar protest on Friday and accused the police of not acting quickly. “Today, several people caused disturbances, but the police did not respond for hours,” Debke said in a post on X.

He added that the lack of police intervention allowed attempts to disrupt what remained a peaceful protest.

Sonam Wangchuk’s health status update

As his 20-day hunger strike ended, Wangchuk appealed to people across the country to participate in the AKP’s “Chalo Sansad” rally on July 20, saying the movement needed popular support.

Regarding his health, Wangchuk said that the long fast had a negative impact on his body, but added that he would continue to protest.

Wangchuk said: “Yes, I am still alive. 20% of my body is gone. After the fat, the muscles are gone. After that, the organs will go. Finally, the brain. It is not time yet.”

The CJP protests, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over irregularities in the examination system, began on June 20. Wangchuk joined the demonstration in Jantar Mantar on June 28 and has been on an indefinite hunger strike since then.
