General Subramani takes charge of India’s new civil defence: All about the ‘Pakistan-China expert’

General NS Raja Subramani, known for his expertise in Pakistan and China affairs, has taken over as India’s new Chief of Defense Staff. General Subramani was succeeded by General Anil Chauhan, who signed on after his term as the country’s top military commander ended on Saturday.

The Center had approved the appointment of General Subramani earlier this month. One of its core mandates is to implement the ambitious military theater plan and enhance tri-service synergies.

The military officer, shortly after assuming charge, said transformation of the armed forces and organizational reforms to enhance synergy and integration among the tri-services would be his primary focus.

“We will work to accelerate the development, introduction and integration of local weapons into our armed forces,” he said in a brief media statement, reported by Novosti News Agency.

He was quoted as saying: “Our armed forces have consistently demonstrated professionalism and operational decisiveness in protecting our national interests. We are committed to protecting our country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

“I assure the citizens of India that the Armed Forces will continue to serve the nation with dedication, courage, honor and professionalism,” he added.

General Subramani’s tenure in the Indian Army

General Subramani was serving as the Military Advisor at the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS). He retired as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army on July 31 last year.

Born on 21 July 1968 in Mumbai, he was commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles in 1985. Since then, he has held key leadership roles, including commanding II Corps and the 17th Mountain Division.

General Subramani holds advanced degrees in Defense Studies from the University of Madras, where he completed his Master of Arts (MA) and King’s College, London, where he completed his Master of Philosophy (M.Phil). He is also an alumnus of the National Defense Academy (NDA) and the Indian Military Academy (IMA).

During a career spanning nearly four decades, he served in a wide range of conflict areas and terrains and held numerous command, staff and education appointments.

He commanded the 16th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles in Assam, which was deployed in a counter-insurgency role as part of Operation Rhino. He was also posted as Defense Attaché at the Embassy of India in Astana, Kazakhstan and also served as Assistant Military Secretary at MS Branch at Army Headquarters with the rank of Colonel. General Subramani served as Colonel of the General Staff (Operations) at Eastern Command Headquarters. He also served as Deputy Commander of Rashtriya Rifles Sector in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Pakistan and China expert”

Known for his understanding of operational dynamics on the eastern and northern borders, General Subramani is widely recognized as an expert on Pakistan and China affairs.

Subramani took over as Commander-in-Chief of II Corps, succeeding Lieutenant General Surinder Singh Mahal. After a one-year tour of duty, he moved to the Northern Command in Udhampur as Chief of Staff, assuming the position in May 2022.

In March 2023, he assumed the position of Commander-in-Chief of Central Command, succeeding Lieutenant General Yogendra Dimri, who retired in February 2023.

On 1 July 2024, General Subramani took over as 47th Deputy Chief of Army Staff. He took over the post from General Upendra Dwivedi upon his elevation to the post of Chief of Army Staff.

General NS Subramani is one of the most decorated soldiers and has received many military decorations for his service. These include the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Sena Medal (SM) and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM).
