The Election Commission of India began counting votes for the 2026 Assembly elections at 8 am on Monday, and soon after the BJP took an early lead only to widen the gap against the TMC.
After several rounds of counting, the BJP was leading or winning 206 seats, according to ECI data at 7:30 pm, while the TMC was struggling in second place with a margin of 81 seats.
Besides West Bengal, the BJP also registered wins in Assam and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
He said the verdict in the 2026 Assembly elections is proof of India being the “mother of democracy”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the Constitution of India did not win today, not just democracy.
The 93 per cent voter turnout is historic in itself, he said, adding that polling records in Assam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala witnessed strong participation of women.
Paying tribute to the security forces, Prime Minister Modi said: “Your contribution to preserving the dignity of Indian democracy will always be remembered.”
Speaking about Bengal’s landslide victory, Prime Minister Modi remembered Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and said his soul must have found peace now.
Prime Minister Modi said that a new chapter has been added to Bengal and added that the state is now free of fear as the public has shown the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC the exit door.
“We will bounce back,” says Mamata.
In parallel, Mamata Banerjee addressed the media and alleged that the BJP had “looted” over 100 seats, terming the party’s victory as “immoral”.
“BJP has looted more than 100 seats. The Election Commission is a BJP committee. I have complained to the CO and Manoj Agrawal, but they are not doing anything. Do you think this is a victory? It is an immoral victory, not a moral victory,” Mamata Banerjee said.
She said that everything the Election Commission, along with the Central Forces, the Prime Minister and the Home Minister did, was absolutely illegal.
We will bounce back,” Mamata Banerjee said and also claimed that she was kicked.
“From 3 pm onwards, they were beating us. I was kicked. The CCTV cameras were switched off. None of our agents were allowed to enter (the counting centre). The labor office assured me that our agents would be allowed, but after that, he was not available anywhere. I complained everywhere,” Mamata Banerjee said.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi in his speech called for “badlaav [change]“instead of” badla [revenge]”.
