The incident took place at Byadarahalli police limits on Tuesday. The deceased Kiran (27 years old) and the accused Prerana were colleagues in a telecommunications company and had been in a relationship for nearly a year. Police sources indicate that tensions have recently escalated between the two, with the woman allegedly upset by Kiran ignoring her and refusing to marry.

According to investigators, Prerana called Kiran to her home in Anjanapura on Tuesday morning around 10 am when her mother and brother were not at home. After spending some time talking, she allegedly blindfolded him and tied his hands and feet to a chair.

“When he asked her why she was restricting him so much, she told him: ‘This is a foreign-style show, just stay calm,’” DCP DL Nagesh said, citing details from the preliminary investigation.

Kieran reportedly remained seated, unaware of what was about to happen, anticipating the surprise. But in a shocking turn, the accused allegedly poured petrol on him and set him on fire. He was unable to escape due to the restrictions, so he died instantly.

The police revealed that the accused also recorded the entire act on her mobile phone. He added: “Even when the victim was burning, she continued recording the video. This aspect shows the brutality of the crime.”

In an initial attempt to mislead investigators, the woman reportedly told police: “I was in the toilet when I heard a noise. When I came out, Kieran set himself on fire.” However, this version quickly collapsed during the investigation.

Surveillance camera footage and preliminary results indicated that Kiran did not bring any fuel with him.

“There is strong suspicion that the accused had arranged the petrol in advance. This indicates premeditation,” the officer added.

The Public Prosecution said: “The accused woman was detained and interrogated. It was proven that she set her lover on fire. It appears that the act was motivated by anger at the neglect in the relationship.”

A case of murder has been registered, and further investigations are underway to determine the sequence of events and motive in detail.
